Youth Leadership Development
IYO Youth Leadership Development & Family Preservation (YLDFP)component
was the beginning of IYO - helping young people to set a positive goal which
included completion of college. The message was heard and activities were
put in place to assist in this endeavor. Today' s YLDFP aims at a more
comprehensive approach in addressing the needs of young people ages 5-17;
with more emphasis placed on "family development and stabilization" due to
the environment that has been allowed to develop around young people.
More nurturing is needed, along with exposure and understanding to the larger
society, and more activities to build up self reliance, development of greater
sense of independence - leader not follower, and a will to establish a better
quality of life.
The After Three activities and Summer Sessions include: homework assistance
and tutoring, arts & crafts, recreation, cultural and spiritual sessions, case
management sessions, computer literacy, and community service projects to
reinforce being a part of a solution to a greater problem.
LATCH KEY: A program for young people 5-12 who parents/gardians are either
employed, in training, or absent from the home during the hours of 3-7pm
during the school year or young people who need summer activities. IYO
provides a Safe Haven for young people in this group to experience and gain the
knowledge that they belong to a larger society that will protect and care for
them. All of the After Three activities occur daily. The Summer Play Street
operates from 8am - 5pm (weather permitting).
JEDI- (Juvenile Enrichment & Development Institute) service youth, 8-12 who
have documented behavior problems. Efforts are concentrated on helping them
identify the problem, identify actions to correct, and habits to sustain correction.
FAMILY PRESERVATION: Family meetings/sessions are conducted quarterly to
assure that the goals for each youth is an agreed model that is shared both at
IYO and at the home. Activities that assist parents in overcoming everyday
hurdles or gaining knowledge about youth dilemmas or assisting parents in
dealing with individual personal issues are conducted during these sessions.
Topics covered include: drug addiction, anger management, proper nutritional
habits, obesity in families, and setting goals for each family member early in life.
